Fundamental Laws for Business & Personal Success and Fulfilment: the Law of Polarity

I deeply believe that universal principles are running our personal and professional lives. I also believe that, in order to run your life or business effectively and with peace of mind, you need to have some basic knowledge about these universal principles.

In this article, I'll discuss the universal principle of polarity.

Napoleon Hill, author of Think And Grow Rich, said "Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit."

That pretty much sums up the Law of Polarity, and its purpose. In more of a definition-style, the Law of Polarity states that everything that exists has an equal and exact opposite. To put it even stronger: for anything to exist, there has to be an equal and exact opposite.

For example: you cannot experience sadness without having an idea about happiness. Light cannot be experienced as such if you don't know what darkness is. To feel successful, you must have a sense of what failure is.

There are two major practical applications to the Law of Polarity in coaching. Many people who come to me for life or business coaching state that they don't know what they want. Well, I always challenge that statement. NOT knowing what you want means you MUST have an idea about what you DO want! You're just not looking at it properly!

To get clear about what it is my clients want in that case, I let them sum up --as extensively as possible- what it is they do NOT want (anymore). Pretty soon, they start coming up with ideas about their true desires. They must; it is Law!

The other practical application is in the field of so-called "negative experiences". A technique used by many NLP practitioners is to have a client with negative experiences look at what the "learnings", the positive outcomes of that situation were. There must be positives in the situation, even if you think there are none. Again, it is Law.

An example: a client had serious financial troubles. Pretty horrible for sure; the whole situation impacted the client's personal and professional life deeply. At first he couldn't see any positives in his predicament.

When advised to start looking at the positives in the experiences, he came up with many "good" things that eventuated after the bankruptcy:

* He and his wife grew closer and closer. * There suddenly was a whole lot of "spare" family time, and he used it! * In the first couple of weeks, he had many a free hour; in those hours he thought up ideas for a new business, which he's now implementing. * He had to look closely at his own passions, and what he wanted from life. This self-reflection gave him a clear picture about his purpose. * And many, many more things

So . . . . . . how bad was the bankruptcy really? Well, not nice, for sure, but with many seeds of an equivalent or greater benefit!

Try it in your own life, whether personally or professionally. Keep in mind that for everything "bad" there must be something "good", and find it!
